Website Hosting Setup

How To: Setup Domain + Hosting

Here are my instructions + recommendations for purchasing a domain name and setting up your hosting (which I'll happily assist you with). Choose your website platform below to view the steps

WORDPRESS

Wordpress instructions vary depending on the hosting provider you choose. I always recommend Premium hosting, but also provide info for Standard hosting as well!

+ - PREMIUM WORDPRESS HOSTING + INSTRUCTIONS

WHY

For hosting WordPress websites, my top recommendation is WPEngine. This is the website that my site is hosted on, and is the site where I build your staged WordPress website (to either remain, or be transferred to a standard hosting option).  WPEngine has a fast and secure hosting, that will be able to grow along with your business and brand without crashing, no matter how much web traffic you suddenly receive. They also have AMAZING 24/7 live customer support and automatic updates to keep the newest version of WordPress installed on your site.

WHAT IT INCLUDES

WPEngine includes hosting services only. You will have to purchase a domain name and email (if you’d like) elsewhere.

HOW TO SET UP

  1. Purchase a domain name. I recommend one from Bluehost or GoDaddy. Feel free to Google for some potential current coupon codes, especially for GoDaddy. Some may work, others may not, but it’s worth a few tries!
  2. Once your site is ready to launch, I will send you a “transfer” request via WPEngine, that transfers the staged version of your website, to you for you to setup your monthly billing by creating an account and providing your information.
  3. Once your billing is setup, the site will be eligible to go from staging to live. You will then provide me with the login information for your Godaddy or Bluehost account (or whoever you purchased your domain name from) . I will handle the rest from there!
  4. (Optional) For an e-mail address, I recommend setting one up with G-Suite versus purchasing one through your domain name provider. The cost is $5/mo per user. With G-Suite, you can get a business email addresses with your company name (you@yourcompany). You can also create group email aliases such as sales@yourcompany. I’d be happy to assist with setup if needed.

WHY

If you have a simple website, do not anticipate a lot of web traffic, or would like to stay within a smaller monthly hosting budget, then I recommend Bluehost or GoDaddy.  Each of these sites have affordable “Managed WordPress Hosting Plans” for under $10/mo.

WHAT IT INCLUDES

Each includes a free domain name (with an annual plan) or an option to add-on a domain name purchase. Each also offers e-mail add-ons (although I recommend G-Suite over any paid options for these).

HOW TO SET UP

  1. Purchase a domain name and managed wordpress hosting via either Bluehost or Godaddy using the links provided above.
  2. Once your site is complete and ready to launch, you will then provide me with the login information for your Godaddy or Bluehost account
  3. I will then transfer your site from the live, staged site on WPEngine, to your site with this host. Sometimes, not everything transfers perfectly, so I will spend an additional day tweaking any fixes.

SQUARESPACE

Squarespace is its own host, with monthly plans to choose from. Setup instructions vary depending on if you choose to purchase your domain via a standard provider or via Squarespace

+ - ALL SQUARESPACE

WHY

You can view Squarespace’s monthly pricing plans here. If you choose to save money annually by purchasing an annual plan (vs. a monthly plan) it comes with a free domain name! If you choose to stick with a monthly plan, Squarespace domain names are $20. This can be a good option because everything is all in one place (both domain and hosting).

WHAT IT INCLUDES

Domain + Hosting. You will have to purchase email (if you’d like) elsewhere.
